Over the years there have been plenty of games that I watched during development and really didn’t get all that excited for. Occasionally I spot a feature in the game that suddenly has me wanting to give it a shot. Modern Warfare 3 is one such game.

I have played first person shooters for a long time. Going all the way back to Wolfenstein 3D on PC way back in the day. With the Call of Duty series, I have played every incarnation in the last few years except for Black Ops. The games are always great but whether it’s set in the modern-day or more of a WW2 setting, I’ve been playing war shooters for a long time. Even tho I played a bit of Modern Warfare 2 and World at War, the last CoD game I really played a bit of was CoD 4 Modern Warfare. Don’t get me wrong, the Call of Duty series are great games. I just felt that I had over saturated myself with the series and just couldn’t get into them anymore.

They always try to implement features into the follow up titles in the series to keep things from getting stale. There were some cool features like the dog tags mode, where if you kill someone before you get credit for it you have to go collect their tags. Cool. A feature that I’m curious to try but it wasn’t enough to get me to come back to CoD.

The one feature that I did learn of recently while watching a video was the weapon leveling. In earlier CoD games if I remember correctly you got perks for your character as you leveled up and unlocked different weapon attachments by completing different tasks. Getting an amount of kills or head shots with a specific weapon would unlock things. Worked well but I found it to be a pain in the ass sometimes. I found myself getting merc’ed a lot when I was thinking too much about what I needed to do to unlock stuff. That’s probably just a me problem tho. I tend to get into my head sometimes when playing games and it screws me up.

When I learned that they are giving weapons xp bars to level up and unlock perks/proficiencies it caught my eye. There have been systems similar to this in other games but it’s new to the CoD series. Some of the weapon proficiencies sound really cool. One example that I saw that seemed interesting was the ability to hold your breath while using an assault rifle. Very cool. Also another one allows you to put two attachments on a weapon. So these proficiencies really give you the chance to customize your favorite weapon to your own play style.

On a side note there will still be challenges to unlock the pro versions of the Perks. So for those that enjoy the challenges to unlock things, it’s still there.

Adding an element of customization like that to CoD really brings something new to the table for the series. It’s definitely got me wanting to come back. I’ve been away from the series for some time now so I’m sure that I’m completely gonna get pwned. Should be fun.

I have a slight concern about getting back into CoD. I may end up spending so much time playing it that my list of games to complete before SWTOR comes out just wont get done. We’ll see how it goes.

What games have you had an experience like this with? A game that you weren’t overly excited about and then you saw a certain mechanic or feature that changed your mind.

Thanks for reading.
